I met the blog, through an article that came out in a magazine here in Brazil. In this magazine, we were only introduced to cover, and some descriptions of the history of the unusual meeting between Mandrake and Tarzan. I became interested much by history. Could you kindly provide us with the pages of this adventure?
No more, thank you, and again: congratulations for the excellent work.Celso Nuneshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00446877803337144611noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7429989861355780902.post-76370745610794783952014-09-06T00:57:10.593-07:002014-09-06T00:57:10.593-07:00I’d like to thank you for introducing me to the Tu...I’d like to thank you for introducing me to the Turkish version of Prince Valiant. Although I didn’t start reading Hal Foster’s newspaper series until the 1960s, it was always a treat to get the Sunday papers to see how Val and his offspring fared for the week. Although the series initially jumped around time irritatingly, especially early on, it was still fairly historical for the average reader, introducing them to historical events that they might not have been exposed otherwise. For many readers these historical periods and events were only faintly covered in school and it may have spurred readers to follow up an episode with a trip to the library. This was long, long before the internet and even before smart phones – dinosaurs walked the earth & etc.

A little quick research will show how important Hal Foster’s work was to younger aspiring artists. I was never a rabid fan of Prince Valiant and not terribly interested in his Tarzan series, but I liked his slightly-old fashioned art and the narrative style vs word balloons, which set a more serious narrative tone.

It would be interesting to see a side-by-side comparison between the English and Turkish publications, especially the later Aslan Tekin version. I have to wonder about how the Turkish editors dealt with some of the issues of translation and historical perspective. Certainly making Val of Seljuk would be more recognizable character origin than on one who came from Thule and settled in Britain. Foster seemed to avoid a lot of stereotypes and pratfalls of writers of the period, showing he was not mere pulps writer. A number of the hard back books with black and white illustrations came into my hands over the years and it was nice to read a story arc complete without weekly episodic interruption. Really these books were much better without the color and inherent loss of quality of newspaper printing. Thank you again and I look forward to your next post.
CoastConFanhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07250561260148656254noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7429989861355780902.post-16729743688898931352014-08-30T06:05:19.461-07:002014-08-30T06:05:19.461-07:00I own a copy of the of the oblong Buck Ryan. Their English titles are "Arty Crafty" (the villainess Twilight pairs with a dishonest artist to sell fake Tudor miniatures), "The sport of kinks" (an adventurer seduces the daughter of a rich horse trainer), "The strange antique shop" (Twilight is involved in a diamond smuggling ring) and "Number One" (Twilight, who has gone straight, is abducted by a mad scientist). They are uniformly well and inventively written, altough it is clear that by the fourth, Monk - if it was he who wrote the strip - had decided to take the strip in a more rough-edged direction, with Ryan doing six months in jail and being very unpopular with the police, and Twilight recycled as his lover while keeping her vampish and gangster's moll attributes. Except from when Monk used the strip to rehearse his ludicrous and offensive view of "dagos" - it is hilarious to reflect that it was in Italy that his strip was kept alive, when his country had totally forgotten him - the strips are consistently well and inventively written, and the characters are someting more than cardboard cut-outs.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.com
